The meaning of the new title

Hello, my name is Jasper, and I am a churcholic.  It all started about the time I was born.  I spent most evenings in church and I was unable to not become addicted.  I was not addicted to anything about God.  But, I became addicted to the life style of a churcholic.
  1. I am very good at pretending I am fine when I am dying
  2. I am very good at judging others, those who do not practice the churcholic lifestyle and those that do
  3. I am very good at not dealing with my sin
  4. I am very good at believing I am very good
  5. I am very good at singing about Jesus on Sunday and ignoring Him the rest of the week
  6. I am very good at using my time, energy, money, and resources as if I own them and they are not owned by Jesus
  7. I am very good at appearing as if I read my Bible while it is picking up dust
  8. I am very good at being homophobic
  9. I am very good at being sexist
  10. I am very good at being racist
  11. I am very good at being an arrogant Calvinist
  12. I am very good at hating arrogant Calvinist
  13. I am very good at flipping God off when he tells me to do something I do not wish to do
  14. I am very good at not believing I am doing #13, when I am doing #13
These are merely I few signs of a churcholic.  I hope to chronicle my recovery here.  Thank you for listening.

Why I need Easter

Easter always seems to come at the most needed moment for me every year. This time last year, I was in a horrible place--largely a result of my own mistakes. This year I am a bad place--largely a result of my own on again, off again depression. But, Easter always reminds me of thing I have forgotten.
Easter reminds me that I am actually loved. I almost never believe that is true. When people tell me they love me, I mostly think they are either lying or that they love some nice, untrue image they have of the man that I am. My cynicism tells me that if they truly saw me for what I am, then they would not dare utter those words or they would just continue to lie.
But, Easter actually tells me that the God of all creation, Lord of heaven and earth, who knows me for what I truly am does love me. All the Sunday school songs I sang as a child are actually true. God sees me for my true nature, saw that in eternity, and yet chose to save me. It is incomprehensible.

Nehemiah 4:14

"Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your brothers, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your homes." (Nehemiah 4:14)

Henry David Thoreau (a man who was anything but a Christian) said, "Most men lead lives of quite desperation and go to their graves with their songs still in them." Sadly, what Thoreau said is true. Most men will be born, go to school, get married, have kids, die and that will be the extent of their life. Sadly, this is the only thing that most churches aspire men to acheive. But, what God calls men to do is to fight. This fight is not with fists, swords, or guns (but, it certainly sometimes involves those things) but this fight is to do as Nehemiah 4:14 directs us. What does this fighting look like.

"fight for your brothers"
The call to fight for our brothers is a call for men to help each other. The reality is that iron needs to sharpen iron. Men need to inspire other men to be better men. But, in our culture (when I say our culture, I mean "conservative Christian" culture) this is not even ecouraged. Darrin Patrick, a pastor in St. Louis, said the reason why he did not do a typical men's ministry in his church was because "most men's ministries are simply youth group for boys with beards and do not direct men to become better men." Masculinity is something that is rarely appreciated, rarely aspired to, and rarely acheived among men. First, as John Piper has pointed out on a number of occassions, the problem is that many men once they get married no longer have men as friends. We think that if a guy is married he no longer needs other men. But, the basic truth that only other men can teach you how to be a man is still true. A man does not learn how to be a better man from his wife, but from fellow men. Men need to learn to pray together and fight together.

"fight for...your sons"
This is a similar command to "fight for your brothers" with a slight twist. It means that younger men need to be cultivated by older men. This should seem to be so obvious, but it is something that is rarely done. Often times when guys need advice about things they will go to someone in their peer group who is just as blind. But, they should go to someone that is older and has lived through the stage in life you are occupy.

To be continued....

Introduction

My name is Jasper Abbott, I am a law student at the Univerity of Oklahoma.
I grew up in Oklahoma for all but one year of my life (when I was four, my family lived in New Mexico for a year). I was born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
I come from a "Christian" family, although I often dread that term (I dread calling things, other than individuals "Christian", I find something disturbing about it).
I truly came to believe in the gospel in high school.
I am a PK (preachers kid)
PK means "someone with deep psychological issues with the church and probably authority in general as a result of spending so much time in church as a young child"
I enjoy talking about ANYTHING that is slightly related to theology, I find such conversations interesting.
I am a malajusted Christian.
